How to write a card message

We know it can be a daunting task to write a message to someone offering your condolences on the recent loss of a loved one. Finding the right words can be difficult, but saying something simple is better than saying nothing at all.

Depending on your relationship with the departed, as well as the person receiving the condolences, messages can include memories of good times, a meaningful quote, or simply your genuine words of support. Let them know you are thinking of them during this difficult time, and offer your support so they know they are not alone as they cope with the sudden loss.

Even though you may have shared a similar loss as them and feel you can relate, do not minimize theirs by telling them you know what they’re going through. Likewise, never mention that it ‘happened for a reason’, or that ‘he/she was so young’, and instead focus on the positive memories and helping with the grieving process.

While there are no set rules, use your own judgement and express your condolences genuinely from the heart.
