Religious Customs

Traditionally, flowers and herbs were used to anoint the bodies of the deceased, and aromatic flowers decorated the final resting place. Flowers nowadays are sent to the family of the deceased as a tribute to celebrate the life of their loved one. But, many religions and cultures have varying customs when it comes to the acceptance of flowers, as well as their colors.

Jewish
Jewish funeral traditions are as natural as possible, with the body returning to the earth within 24 hours of passing. Flowers are typically not welcome at Jewish funerals, and instead donations are often made in their honor.

Protestant and other Christian faiths
Flowers are welcome to the funeral home or to the family’s home as a gesture of sympathy.

Roman Catholic
Flowers typically adorn the Vigil or Wake prior to the funeral, and can be moved to the funeral services as well as the burial ground.

Hispanic
Floral tributes are welcome at Hispanic funerals, and floral tributes in the shape of a cross are most common.

Muslim
Views of proper etiquette for sending of flowers to the family can vary between the different Muslim sects. Simplicity and moderation are emphasized in the Islam religion, less extravagant arrangements are advised.

Mormon
Most flowers are welcome at Mormon funerals, but avoid arrangements and sprays that include a cross..

Eastern or Greek Orthodox
White flowers are favored, though all flowers are acceptable.

Hindu
Garlands are common at Hindu funerals, though all flower arrangements are welcome but not necessary.

Buddhist
White flowers are acceptable for Buddhist funerals, as they are the traditional flower of mourning. Red flowers should not be sent as it is associated with joy.

Chinese
The symbolism of colors is important in Chinese culture, and white and yellow lilies and chrysanthemums are favored.

Korean
Typically businesses and organizations send funeral flowers, and white chrysanthemums are appropriate.
